'Contraband' Tops Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (TheStreet) -- Universal's Contraband snuck into the top spot at the weekend box office, grossing $24.1 million in its debut, according to industry estimates from BoxOffice.com.

The action film, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a reformed smuggler, came in ahead of expectations, the Associated Press reported.

The 3D rerelease of Walt Disney's(DIS) Beauty and the Beast was No. 2, with $18.5 million in its first weekend.

Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was No. 3 with $11.5 million in its fifth weekend. So far, the fourth installment in the Tom Cruise action series has brought in a total of $186.7 million.

Warner Bros.' Joyful Noise, a musical comedy starring Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, came in fourth, with $11.3 million on its debut weekend.

Universal is owned by General Electric(GE) , while Paramount is owned by Viacom(VIA) , and Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner(TWX) .
