Boulder's Independent Motors moving east
CORRECTION:Boulder's Independent Motors is launching a side business called Boulder Tire, not re-branding itself under that name.
After nearly three decades in west Boulder, Independent Motors is rolling east.
Independent Motors, which has operated at 250 Pearl St. since 1983, plans to move this spring to larger quarters at 5440 Arapahoe Ave.
Construction recently got underway on the 7,800-square-foot facility, which will be nearly twice the size of Independent Motors' longtime home and will allow the venerable auto shop to add a complementary business.
According to Bill Bender, the owner and founder of Independent Motors, there were three reasons for the move: a lack of space, the end of a lease and a need to reinvest.
"We've way outgrown this place," Bender said. "We have nine bays and we've had a pretty solid growth spurt for the last four years. We've been booked in advance, a solid week to two weeks for the past several years.
"Everyone says, 'Oh good for you,' but it's not, because we can't service our customers like we want to."
When it came time to renew the lease, Bender said the property owner was unwilling to extend the lease. Officials for GKN Family LLP, the property's owner, could not be reached for comment.
The third piece of the puzzle was more complicated. Bender had received what was to be considered capital gains after part of his property in Sunshine Canyon burned to the ground during the Fourmile Fire.
After the fire, Bender sold the property to a young couple he previously had been renting to.
"I would have lost 50 percent of the net proceeds to taxes," Bender said. "There's a workaround and it's called a 1031 exchange."
Internal Revenue Code 1031 allows for an investor to reinvest profits from selling a property into another like property in order to avoid paying taxes.
Independent Motors functions as a full-service tire shop; however, Bender believes that due to the name, Independent Motors, most consumers overlook his business. To amend this oversight, Independent Motors will launch a side business called Boulder Tire at the new space.
To balance the construction of the new building, Bender will rent the existing 5,200-square-foot building to local business Concepts Furniture.
John's Auto Care, located at 1900 55th St., barely a block away from where Independent Motors is moving, has noticed the recent rise in competition.
"Industrial business has been moving to the east side of town. There just isn't any opportunity for this type of business on the west side of town anymore," said Barbara Aimes, one of the owners of John's Auto Care.
Bender remains optimistic about moving to an area with more competition.
"I don't have any concerns about increased competition," Bender said. "We have a very loyal customer base."
