Amazon to Unveil Ad-Supported Tablet: Report
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Amazon.com (AMZN) is planning to launch a new advertisement-supported tablet device that will be priced lower than comparable models, according to a published media report.
Exact pricing and the identity of advertisers remain unclear, according to the report, published on The Wall Street Journal's Web site. The report cited anonymous sources involved in discussions over the tablet.
The new tablet would display advertisements when users "wake" it, the report added, citing one anonymous source.
On Thursday, Amazon plans to hold a media event in Santa Monica, Calif. where the e-commerce giant is expected to unveil a new version of its Kindle Fire tablet, which competes with Apple's (AAPL) iPads, the report said.
This past Thursday, Amazon said it had sold out of its existing Kindle Fire device.
The Seattle-based company has sold a range of Kindle e-readers at various prices and has already offered discounts on models that display advertising, the report noted.
