TheStreet Foundation Launches to Boost Financial Literacy
The Foundation was announced by Stephanie Link, TheStreet's chief investment officer, at the company's inaugural Newsmaker's conference in New York. Link will serve as chairman of the Foundation's board, which includes TheStreet's CEO Elisabeth DeMarse. The company's General Counsel Vanessa Soman will serve as the Foundation's president.
TheStreet will provide funding to the Foundation for its financial literacy initiatives. "Our mission is to channel Wall Street dollars to help solve Main Street problems by providing individuals and communities with the tools to change their financial futures," said DeMarse, in a statement. "TheStreet Foundation will provide accessible, actionable insights that can help people build a more prosperous tomorrow."
The Foundation's first initiative will be the Fellows Program, set up to grant seed funding to investigative journalists to help them in the battle against corporate greed, government corruption and consumer fraud. Author and investigative journalist Susan Antilla is the Founding Fellow.
"We are thrilled to name Susan Antilla as our Founding Fellow and to help her continue her insightful and impactful reporting," said Soman, in the company's statement. "Investigative journalism has become a thing of the past in many newsrooms, but TheStreet Foundation's efforts will help keep original reporting alive and consumers informed."
In addition to investigative journalism and education, TheStreet Foundation also provides a host of survey data on its Web site, as well as information on financial literacy events.
In a separate statement, TheStreet also announced the appointment of Janet Lynne Guyon as Editor in Chief of TheStreet.com Web site. Guyon joins TheStreet from Investopedia, where she served as managing editor. Earlier in her career, Guyon worked at Bloomberg News for four years, where she managed Bloomberg.com and edited "Top" news.
Guyon also has more than 18 years' experience with Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal and spent nine years at Fortune.
"Janet is exceptionally well qualified for this position," said DeMarse, in the company's statement. "The digital journalist of today must be skilled at doing video, social media, and incorporating search engine optimization, as well as developing sources and writing stories. They need to have charisma, as well as content. Janet is a true digital journalist and editor with a strong history in real-time financial markets and business coverage."
