Twitter's Next Big Growth Areas

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Twitter generates most of its revenue from the U.S., but it intends to grow its international user base, focusing on a select group of countries.

In the company's S-1 filing, it noted that it had 218.3 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the three months ended June 30, a 44% increase year-over-year. Twitter added that users outside the U.S. accounted for 77% of its average MAUs in the three months ended June 30, but just 25% of its revenues came from outside the U.S. "Our inability to successfully expand internationally could adversely affect our business, financial condition and operating results," the company noted in the filing.

For the six months ended June 30, 2013, Twitter's revenue was $253.6 million. In the filing, Twitter noted that 87% of its $253.6 million in sales was from advertising.

As such, Twitter said it expects to grow its user base in certain international markets, such as Argentina, France, Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. The micro-blogging site expects to see a higher user growth rate in these countries than the U.S.

Twitter is looking at international markets to be the big driver of growth not only in user base, but revenues as well.
