Members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc break ground during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods Thursday morning.
Foxwoods Resort Casino held a ground breaking today for the Tanger Outlets and Gordon Group Holdings LLC.
The premiere shopping center is expected to open in 18 months featuring discounted prices for name brand apparel and accessories, the first of it's kind at a casino in Connecticut that will bring approximately 900 retail jobs to the state and $10.4 million in annual tax revenue.
Speakers at the event were Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Steven B. Tanger, president and chief executive officer of Tanger Factory Outlet Center, Inc., Scott Butera, president and chief executive officer of Foxwoods Resort and Casino, and Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
"This demonstrates a very different relationship that our government has with the tribe," Malloy said. "We treat it as a great partnership."
The national anthem and tribal nation anthem preceded the event which concluded with a fashion show representing some of the dozens of retailers that will occupy the space which will connect "seamlessly" to the casino itself, as well as a smudging ceremony at the site of the ground breaking.
"This will truly be the eighth wonder of the world," Tanger said.
