Sprint Now Offering Vanity Mobile Numbers

Tickers in this article: T S VZ GOOG AAPL

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - You know about vanity license plates. They've been around for decades. Sprint(S) , however, is now offering vanity cell phone numbers.

The telecom giant's using a special code to set these new vanity numbers apart from what you might usually dial. In a partnership with Zoove, Sprint will let you rent a 5-digit, unique name/number/nickname which begins with two asterisks in place of the phone number. The service is called StarStar Me.

Here are a few possible examples: **BILLG (**24554), **TCOOK (**82665), **OBAMA (**62262) or **MITTR (**64887). I think you get the idea.

People can call your StarStar Me number from any phone on one of the big four carriers' (AT&T(T) , Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon(VZ) ) mobile networks anywhere in the United States.

Users can also download a free StarStar Me app for Google(GOOG) Android smartphones, which will soon be available on Apple(AAPL) iOS phones. This lets users manage incoming calls, as well as sending text messages or other information.

StarStar Me will also work on basic "feature" phones.

Sprint will charge $2.99 a month for the new service for up to two StarStar "numbers" for each real cell phone number.

If you're interested you can sign-up by dialing a special StarStar number (**63) from your Sprint phone - or via the Internet.

Sprint shares slipped 0.98% to $5.04 on Tuesday.
