Ashland Dairy Queen planning to move
Fans of the Dairy Queen Blizzard may have to travel to a different part of town next year to indulge their sweet tooth.
Nick Traiforos, owner of the Dairy Queen at 6 Chestnut St., confirmed Friday he is looking to move the fast-food business to a new location at 130 Pond St., near Boston Paintball.
"We are still starting with permits and stuff, but that is the plan," Traiforos said by phone. "The lease is up here. It gets so complicated with Dairy Queen and the landlord that it is not going to work."
Traiforos said he has submitted plans to the town and the first public meetings are in August.
Dairy Queen has been at the intersection of Chestnut and Union streets since the 1960s, Traiforos said.
"It's been here a long time," he said.
The Chestnut Street location has walk-up window service and the business closes during the winter. Traiforos said he is planning to construct a new building on Pond Street that will include indoor seating and a drive-thru window. It would also be open year-round.
Traiforos said he will need to go before the Zoning Board of Appeals to get a special permit for the drive-thru.
The Pond Street property is about 1.3 acres. The new building will be about 6,000 square feet, Traiforos said, with the Dairy Queen using 2,000 square feet. The other 4,000 square feet will be for retail business and Traiforos said he is working to get that space filled.
Traiforos said he would ideally like to get the new place open by next spring. He added he would probably open later in the year than he normally does.
