55 Goodnow Road, Sudbury
|
Cynthia Mayer has made a habit out of building dream homes. From Chicago to Sudbury, and points in between, she has overseen the construction and completion of six magnificent properties, each one as inviting as it is elegant. While it’s been suggested she take her building passion public, Mayer firmly shakes her head at the idea. “Each one is such a personal undertaking; I put so much into every house. I don’t think I could do it for profit.” It’s a shame for the building masses, but a stroke of fortune for the next owner of 55 Goodnow Road.
For the construction of this Sudbury property, the industrious homeowner teamed with expert builder, Daryl Nash of Nash Development. They mingled ideas and inspiration, employing the architectural genius of Robert A.M. Stern, whose design work is noted throughout the world. In the end, Nash and Mayer feel they’ve achieved a pinnacle property with 55 Goodnow. Set on 2.15 acres, the shingle-style home with portico entry and English-inspired dormers is impeccably sited, surrounded by landscaping unlike any in the area. It’s a bold statement, but one Mayer is confident making since she imported a landscape design team from Chicago. The home boasts 400 square feet of custom brick patios, integrated brick pathways, extensive exterior lighting, a fire pit and an eye-catching array of plantings and perennials.
Exterior amenities segue beautifully from outside to in where our tour begins in a well-appointed greeting area. The tri-story foyer boasts a touch of European elegance, Mayer complementing Nash’s exceptional skill with her own panache. “I tried to make changes that would distinguish this home from any other. It’s all in the details,” said Mayer.
Some of those details are quite stunning, the main floor powder room being a perfect example. Floor-to-ceiling beveled glass makes this half bath look as if it is ready for royalty, a faux finish ceiling painted to mimic the tile underfoot. Devine details continue in the formal living room, which features a tray ceiling with stacked crown molding, the first of four fireplaces and shoulder-height wainscoting. A 15-by-17 cherry library is finished in a surround of hardwood paneling, coffered ceiling, an array of built-ins and gas-burning fireplace. Our homeowner’s personal touches peek through via the pale blue paint used on the ceiling, adding a layer of richness to the overall motif.
The library and family room open to a three-season porch. It’s the place to escape nine months out of the year, though so inviting buyers will easily envision themselves out here during a January thaw. Glass windows are exchanged for screens in the summer, the porch featuring a mahogany floor and partial barrel mahogany ceiling. Excellent traffic flow is demonstrated as we enter the sunken family room via the porch, the main entrance connecting from the kitchen. Interior columns, coffered ceiling and a span of five windows with transoms are among the highlights. Like most areas of the home, this room also features surround sound. A fieldstone gas fireplace creates a keen focal point, warming this house in every way.
Whether you’re dining, visiting or cooking, the kitchen proves to be the hub of this expansive home. The custom Scandia kitchen features solid cherry cabinetry with a wide array of integrated elements. Prep space is in good supply, all of it topped in granite. The cabinet space expands to a wet bar, accentuated with glass doors and lighted shelving. An oversized, furniture-grade center island anchors the large kitchen, the breakfast bar curving ever so slightly for optimum seating. Appliance amenities include a Thermador six-burner professional grade range with griddle, 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator, DCS venting system, Fisher Paykel stacked dishwasher and Thermador double ovens. Thoughtful amenities continue with instant hot water, pot spigot, walk-in pantry and a built-in beverage cooler. The first floor also has a spacious formal dining room, half bath with hand-painted wall painting and a laundry room with a custom office niche. A mudroom opens to a rear staircase and the home’s four-car garage with separate maintenance entrance.
A private wing houses the master bedroom of this Sudbury property, the 17-by-22 sleep space, complemented by a 9-by-17 sitting area. Custom plantation shutters are seen here and throughout the five-bedroom second story. Plush patterned carpet, interior columns, crown molding and a tray ceiling are among the amenities. Passing by a spacious and well-appointed walk-in, we find the master bath. It features a double vanity with granite counter Kohler free-standing soaking tub and walk-in shower with frameless glass door entry.
The four remaining bedrooms all feature en suite baths, making this house a standout for both guests and additional family members. Bedroom square footage is generous, the largest measuring 19 by 16; deep customized closets are also part of each bedroom suite. The four en suite baths are thoughtfully understated with traditional finishes such as subway tile and solid surface counters. The wraparound landing separates the wings in addition to accessing an unfinished walkup third floor.
The full daylight lower level is finished to the specifications found on the main floors of the home. It is divided into four dedicated rooms, including a 22-by-20 game room with wood-burning fireplace and 14-by-25 exercise room with rubber mat flooring. A full bath is accessible from both these areas. A wet bar with custom cabinetry, granite and built-in fridge add to the amenities found here. Headlining the entertainment-oriented level is a 16-by-16 home theatre. This highly customized room features the optimum in electronics and home theater equipment. Custom features continue with a temperature- controlled wine cellar. Its castle door entry brings a bit of whimsy to the design, the interior meeting the needs of serious wine connoisseurs.
Additional amenities include five zones of heat and central air, radon remediation system, sprinkler system, Aprilaire dehumidifiers and central vacuum.
The home is being marketed for $2,495,000 by Realtors Carole Daniels and Gabrielle Daniels of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. For more information contact Carole Daniels at 508-277-6956 or Gabrielle Daniels at 617-320-8150.
