Santorum Wins Louisiana Primary

BATON ROUGE, La. (TheStreet) -- Rick Santorum cruised to a victory in Louisiana's primary Saturday, where his platform found appeal with the conservative state's Republican voters.

The former Pennsylvania Senator proclaimed Saturday night that the win had sent "shock waves" through the political world, The New York Times reported.

But the 20 delegates up for grabs Saturday -- and the 26 to be allocated later -- are unlikely to help Santorum close the wide gap between him and front-runner Mitt Romney, the Times noted.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney took second place in Louisiana, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed third.

Gingrich's finish failed to confirm his hopes of doing well in Southern states, but the candidate immediately dismissed suggestions that he drop out of the Republican race, Reuters reported.

The focus of the race now shifts to Wisconsin, Washington D.C. and Maryland, which hold primaries April 3.
