CarMax: S&P Intraday Laggard

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- CarMax(KMX) was the worst-performing stock in the S&P 500 Tuesday morning.

The S&P was trading down 5.24 points, or 0.38%, to 1,376.96.

Shares of CarMax declined 2.41% to $31.99. The used car retailer reported earnings last week of $95 million, or 41 cents a share, up from year-earlier profit of $88.8 million, or 39 cents.

The company also announced that it intends to open 10 superstores in the next year.

CarMax has an estimated price-to-earnings ratio for next year of 15.14 times; the average for specialty retailers is 16.04. For comparison, O'Reilly Automotive(ORLY) has a higher forward P/E of 18.01.

Ten of the 15 analysts who cover CarMax rated it buy. Four analysts gave the stock a hold rating and one rated it sell.

TheStreet Ratings gives CarMax a B grade with a buy rating and a $38.38 price target. The stock has risen 4.99% year to date.
