Dependable Cleaners, Hannaford’s team with Ellie Fund
More than 40 local businesses have teamed up with the Needham-based Ellie Fund to raise money for programs to ease the effects of breast cancer on families dealing with the disease.
The Ellie Fund initiated the “Do Good” campaign in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is this month. The goal is to raise $100,000 for the organization this fall.
The Ellie Fund was founded by brothers Jeff and Eliot Popkin of Newton in 1995 to honor their mother, Ellie, who died in 1987 after a long battle with breast cancer.
Among the Massachusetts businesses involved in the “Do Good” campaign is Quincy-based Dependable Cleaners.
Christa Hagaerty, president of Dependable Cleaners, said she is impressed by the Ellie Fund’s mission and staff.
“The volunteers and the paid staff, I find them to be just so committed to their cause and the way in which it can make such a meaningful difference,” she said. “People always think about the financial hardships, but the hardest thing I’ve seen is that people feel like they can’t do anything.”
Another business partnering with the Ellie Fund this month is Hannaford Supermarkets, whose Massachusetts stores will be collecting donations from customers and making a contribution in gift cards at the end of the month.
“We’re encouraging customers to give as much as they can because it is a really important organization,” said Hannaford spokesman Eric Blom.
