Google Launches Nexus 7 Tablet

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- In an effort to take on Apple(AAPL) and the dominant success of the iPad, Google(GOOG) announced its own branded tablet, the Nexus 7.

Speaking at the company's I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Google announced the product, partnering with Asus.

The tablet is priced at $199 and features NVidia(NVDA) Tegra 3 quad-core CPU chipset. Features include a 1280 x 800 HD display, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities, according to AllThingsD.

The Nexus is said to offer 9 hours worth of video playback, and approximately 300 hours of standby time. The tablet weighs just 300 grams. By comparison, Amazon's(AMZN) Kindle Fire weighs 415 grams.

Shares of Google are higher in Wednesday trading, up 1.02% to $570.44.
