BELVIDERE Gov. Pat Quinn has announced that Chrysler will increase production at its Belvidere plant.

Chrysler recently invested $700 million to update the plant, in order to begin production of the new Dodge Dart at the facility. The Belvidere plant has grown to 4.8 million square feet, and currently produces the Jeep models Compass and Patriot.

Quinn had previously announced a business investment package for the company in 2010. The package created almost 1,800 new jobs and has been cited as the reason for Chrysler's decision to use the Illinois plant for production of its newest vehicles.

The package includes EDGE tax credits, Employer Training Investment Program funds for employee job-training, and Large Business Development Program funds.

Quinn said in a press release, "The auto industry is essential to growing our economy. Illinois automakers and their suppliers are thriving today because we have helped meet their needs. By providing companies like Chrysler with the tools they need, we're helping them not only succeed but thrive."
