Ford Recalls 2013 1.6-Liter Escape Due to Fire Danger

DETROIT (TheStreet) -- Ford (F) said Thursday it will recall the 2013 Escape with 1.6-liter engines to replace a fuel line that could split and leak fuel when the engine is running.

The automaker said it is recalling 11,500 Escapes with 1.6-liter engines built through July 11, 2012, and sold in North America. Models with other engine sizes are not impacted.

The recall is voluntary, Ford said. The leaking fuel could result in an underhood fire, although to date no injuries have been reported.

Owners have been advised to stop driving 2013 Escapes and to immediately contact their dealers, who will deliver loaner vehicles and transport the Escape to the dealership for repairs, all at no charge. The repair takes less than an hour, pending parts availability. Loaner vehicles will be available until the repairs are completed.

"We have identified an issue and are taking quick actions in the best interest of our customers," said Ray Nevi, assistant director, Ford automotive safety office, in a prepared statement. "Our intensive investigation and testing has identified the area of concern and we are moving as quickly as possible to repair vehicles for our customers. In the meantime, it is extremely important that affected customers not ignore this recall and immediately contact their dealer."

Thursday's recall was the second in a week for the Escape. Over the weekend, Ford recalled 11,000 of the 2013 Escapes built from March 8 to June 7 because of tight clearance around the foot pedals.
