Tuscarawas County Chamber names 2012 award winners
Pissocra-Mathias Realty, Leadership Tuscarawas and teacher Charles Zobel will be among those honored at the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce annual banquet in January.
Volunteer judges recently selected Pissocra-Mathias Realty of New Philadelphia as the 2012 Small Business of the Year. Leadership Tuscarawas is the Organization of the Year and the 2012 Educator of the Year award will be presented to Charles “Chuck” Zobel of the Garaway Local Schools District.
Pissocra-Mathias Realty, owned by Jeff Mathias of New Philadelphia, was nominated by Realtor S. Penny Triplett. She said the business has helped more than 70 organizations by providing items and financial contributions during the past year. Triplett also lauded Mathias for his active involvement with the Community Improvement Corp. of Tuscarawas County, the county Chamber of Commerce, the county Cy Young Old-Timers baseball organization, and the Arizona Chemical CAP Team.
Leadership Tuscarawas recently completed its 10th year of service to the community. The leadership program was nominated by Keith Rathbun of Sugarcreek, publisher of The Budget, who said, “After its first decade, the impact of Leadership Tuscarawas is obvious. This year is its 11th class, and today’s leadership positions throughout the county are being filled by LT alumni. Leadership Tuscarawas is a model of success.”
Chuck Zobel teaches English, speech and journalism at Garaway High School in Sugarcreek. Chamber President Scott Robinson said that “selecting the Educator of the Year was a very difficult decision for the selection committee. We had award submissions regarding a number of outstanding local educators. Our community is fortunate to have these nominees teaching in our area school districts.”
Each nominee was asked to submit his or her educational philosophy.
“One of the many reasons I entered this profession was because I value serving others,” Zobel said. “I feel that the more service one puts forth in any setting, the better the results will be in the end. The level of self I am willing to give others is an important cornerstone of my educational approach.”
Zobel also serves as head cross country coach, junior varsity girls basketball coach, and as a varsity assistant coach for football and track. He was nominated by Matt Mullen of Sugarcreek. The award is sponsored annually by the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce and The Times-Reporter.
The honorees will receive their awards at the Chamber’s 54th annual Awards Banquet on Jan. 22 at Bistro 131 in New Philadelphia.
The Citizen of the Year, Hall of Fame Award, Volunteer of the Year, and the Tourism Ambassador of the Year honors all will be announced at the banquet.
Sponsoring the event are Baker Florists, Boltaron Performance Products, Eagle Machinery, First Federal Community Bank, First National Bank of Dennison, Frontier Communications, Horizon Telecom, Huntington Bank, McInturf Realty, Moore & Neidenthal Inc., Performance Additives, The Budget, Truck Sales & Service, Tuscarawas County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Union Hospital.
