Report: U.S. Capitol on Lockdown After Shots Fired (Update 1)

Updated from 4:09 p.m. ET on developing details.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a car chase ended in gunfire, reports The Associated Press.

The female suspect was shot and killed at the scene after driving down a White House barricade and leading police on a car chase toward the Capitol. Police have not yet confirmed a one-year-old was in the vehicle. One law enforcement officer was injured, says Reuters.

Police enforced shelter-in-place orders for those within the Capitol and surrounding area. The White House was also briefly under lockdown orders as a precautionary measure.

The lockdown temporarily halted House of Representatives and Senate debates on how to end a government shutdown which has stretched into its third day.

The Capitol lockdown eased at 3 p.m. EST with lawmakers resuming meetings in the House and Senate at 3:30 p.m. EST.
