Jeffrey Downey of Stoughton runs J. Downey Internet Consulting. He’s seen here at his Braintree office.
Jeffrey Downey, a former salesman of worker’s compensation insurance, has built a second career selling SEO and other Internet services to businesses looking to be found online by potential customers.
Downey founded J. Downey Internet Consulting in 2009. In addition to SEO work, Downey also helps build businesses’ websites and implement social media strategy from his Braintree office.
Downey said he decided to change fields from sales to online marketing because by 2009, he saw commerce and the Internet as inseparable.
“The Internet was how people are finding services and products online,” he said.
The 42-year-old Stoughton resident runs his business using the tools of Canada-based WSI Marketing. Downey’s business is a WSI franchise, but he uses his personal brand for the business.
Downey has a roster of about 20 clients across a variety of sectors, ranging from woodcraft to financial services.
Through WSI, Downey shows how many people are accessing each client’s website, and what search terms are bringing them there. He shares the data with his clients monthly.
Some tech experts have argued that SEO is becoming less relevant, as more people are accessing websites through links on social media than through search engines in recent years.
Downey thinks the digital marketing techniques that work for some businesses are less likely to work for others.
“We can work with people with social media,” he said. “But it doesn’t work with every business. It’s great for restaurants. But with a CPA firm, are people really going to follow them on Facebook or Twitter?”
